Organic pepper concept at Fruit Logistica

From Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 February, Fruit Logistica will take place in Berlin, Germany. At this international trade fair for the fruit and vegetable sector, Van der Knaap Group will present its solutions in the field of rooting media and substrates.

Total concept for pepper cultivation

Root problems and reduced yields in pepper cultivation cause a lot of unrest among growers. Van der Knaap Group has Forteco® coco growbags in its product range for the cultivation of various types of fruit vegetables. Coco has excellent cultivation properties; it is an airy and highly controllable substrate. It also lends itself very well to an active soil life. Trials with sweet peppers in our own innovation centre ‘de Kas’ showed that a rich and varied micro life develops in coco substrate during cultivation. This was demonstrated using Eurofins Agro's Soil Life Monitor. A rich soil life contributes to a resilient plant that is more resistant to diseases and pests.

At Fruit Logistica, Van der Knaap will present a total concept for sweet pepper cultivation. We offer a complete organic cultivation concept: from sowing to propagation to adult plant. For every grower, we offer possibilities to grow a healthy and productive crop in a sustainable way.

Circular fertilisers

Fewer and fewer chemical pesticides are permitted in horticulture and the focus is shifting towards (as much as possible) chemical-free cultivation. Biological agents are increasingly taking their place. Organic substrate, such as coco, is ideally suited for this transition.

Van der Knaap also focuses on the use of circular fertilisers, produced by a bioreactor. This sustainable cultivation system was developed by our R&D team with the aim of being able to grow organically out of the soil. The bioreactor converts proteins and amino acids into plant-available nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N). The resulting nutrient solution is stable and free of organic residues, fungi and bacteria and can be administered via drippers or other irrigation systems. This puts the grower in control of the amount and timing of application. Organic cultivation thus becomes controllable.

Why choose Van der Knaap Group

As one of the largest substrate suppliers in the Netherlands, Van der Knaap Group has been supporting growers of all kinds of crops with knowledge and experience in the field of rooting and growing media for over forty years. In our own innovation centre ‘de Kas’, we have twelve greenhouses, an outdoor field and an advanced laboratory at our disposal. Tests and trials take place here all the time. This is how we continuously work on innovations and sustainable cultivation solutions. Because we have our own production facilities worldwide, we keep the quality of our (coco)products and certainty of delivery in our own hands. Moreover, this enables us to develop products specifically for various crops and applications.
